According to WHAS11, the Oldham County Police Department, in Kentucky, is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that occurred around 7 p.m on Sunday, July 31, 2022 on Gum Street. The accident involved a collision between a motorcycle and a pickup truck pulling a trailer. The motorcyclist was identified as Joseph Nichols from LaGrange, Kentucky. Nichols was transported to UofL Hospital where it was later confirmed that he died.
Warm weather months can see a spike of motorcycle injuries with an increased number of motorcycle riders seeing the highways and local roads, while the awareness for the riders might be lower along the enjoyable journeys through scenic Kentucky. To further complicate matters, when a motorcyclist has an accident, riders do not have the protection that a driver might have in a car accident – with an enclosed cab of a vehicle so fatalities can be common.
Motorcycle accidents often result in severe injuries or fatalities. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that motorcyclists and their passengers are more than 35 times more likely to die while riding a motorcycle than a car accident – and nine times more likely to become injured while riding a motorcycle than while driving a car. While one could hope that all motorists on the highways would drive prudently, that is obviously not always the case. There are ways a motorcyclist can help prevent a motorcycle accident. Some ways include wearing visible gear, not speeding, not driving during bad weather, and avoiding lane splitting. Here are some typical causes we see for Motorcycle injury accidents:
- Failure To Yield The Right of Way
- Lack of Attention or Distraction
- Vehicle Not In Proper Control
- Alcohol Or Drug Influence
- Driving Too Fast for Conditions
- Following Too Closely
- Exceeded The Stated Speed
- Improper Passing
Other crash variables that cause a motorcycle to crash include uneven pavement, weather, unsealed patches, potholes, unkept roads, slick surfaces, and distractions from passengers. And, motorcyclists – along with the driver of any other motor vehicle – should always watch out for cars and trucks that are changing lanes. Motorcycles can be hard to see and a little extra attention can go a long way in saving the lives of motorcycle drivers and their passengers.
