This is Kentucky Injury Attorney Tate Meagher with the Meagher Injury Lawyers. In this post, I will discuss what to do following a hit-and-run injury car accident.

1. Write Down Vehicle Description and Plate Number

My first recommendation is to write down the vehicle description and plate number for the vehicle that hit and ran. If you were able to get the plate number, be sure to write it down. Try to be as descriptive as possible with your description of the hit-and-run vehicle, including the make, model, size, and color of the vehicle.

2. Call 9-1-1 and Report the Accident

Call 9-1-1 and report the accident right away at the scene. Request that the police come to the scene of the accident and inform them if you are injured and need an ambulance. Go to the hospital and get the necessary treatment. The police will come to the scene and perform an investigation, looking for any evidence. This evidence might help in the long run, as the police can search for eyewitnesses, video surveillance in the area, and any other relevant evidence.

3. Call Your Insurance Company

After getting the initial medical treatment you need, call your insurance company to report the accident. Provide them with the license plate number if you were able to get it and the description of the hit-and-run vehicle. Your insurance company might be able to use this information to pull insurance information on the vehicle that hit and ran.

4. Important Tips During Conversations

  • Do not admit fault for the accident.
  • Stick to the facts and only provide the requested information.
  • Do not say you have no injuries until you are sure. Some injuries take weeks to manifest.
  • Do not accept any settlement offers right away even if your insurer is the one making it. They might be trying to settle what’s called an uninsured motorist claim.

5. Investigate Insurance Information

You can also write a letter to the county clerk where the accident occurred to see if they can pull any insurance information for the hit-and-run vehicle. If the county clerk can provide you with insurance info for the vehicle, call that insurance company and file a claim with them. You will need to provide the county clerk with vehicle information and the plate number if you have it.

6. File an Uninsured Motorist Claim

If your investigation fails and you are unable to find any insurance, file an uninsured motorist claim with your insurance company if you have such coverage. In some cases, if you have what is called uninsured motorist coverage under your automobile policy, you may be entitled to file a claim for uninsured motorist coverage against your insurance company and get a settlement for your injuries and damages through your own policy.
